PROGRESS IN CITY 4467 UNITS COMPLETE NEW BLOCKS OF FLATS Progress being made by the Government Housing Department in the erection of flats and houses for renting purposes in Auckland was reported to the City Council by the city engineer, .Mr. J. Tyler, last night. Mr. Tyler said that the Government was already erecting a block of 25 pensioners' flats in the Great North Road and a further block of 20 pensioners' flats in Vermont Street, while plans had been prepared for the erection of 30 similar flats in Church Street, Ponsonby. He also referred to the Government's tentative plans for 1.50 flats near the corner of Symonds and Wyn.va.rd Streets. Early this year the council had agreed to transfer to the Crown the piece of land at the corner of Ponsonby Road and Picton Street as a /site for 12 pensioners' flats. Since the housing operations were commenced, said Mr. Tyler, the Government had completed 4467 houses in the Auckland district, and a further 780 were now under construction. Government officials were negotiating with the council over the city's requirements in regard to the subdividing of a number of large blocks of land in the Meadowbank and St. John block, the Glendowie estate and at Waterviev, Avon dale. It was resolved to seek approval from the Loans Board for the raising of £-25,000 by special order as the council's contribution toward the cost or land in Grey's Avenue to be purchased-by the Government as sites for workers' dwellings.
