CITY FINANCES

END OF HALF-YEAR POSITION SATISFACTORY "The council's budgetary position at the end of the first half-year may be regarded as sound," stated the Major, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, in a report to the City Council last night accompanying a statement by the city treasurer. .Mr. T. W. M. Ashby, of receipts and payments for the six months ended September 30. "The position is that receipts are being well maintained, having regard to the factors which affect these during the first half-year. Expenditure is generally being kept within the estimates except for one or two small items not budgeted for, and also where payments have been made during the first halfyear which will not be recurring during the second half-year." The Mayor added that it was too early to give any indication whether the 1941-42 current rates would reach the budget estimates, as the bulk of the payments wouljJ not- be received until January- Rates collected, including arrears, to the end of September totalled £107.38:2. compared with £124,847 for the same period last year.
