TELEPHONE DELAYS

SHORTAGE OF STAFF (0.c.) HAMILTON, Tuesday Dissatisfaction with the delay on the telephone when bureau calls were put through was expressed by several speakers at a meeting of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce last evening. The Chief Postmaster, Mr. A. M. Rosie, explained that the delay was caused by staff shortage due to the war, and also as a result of most people waiting for the cheaper rates during the evening. Between the hours of 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. the delay was not more than six minutes. Another factor contributing to the delay was the use made or the service by soldiers in the military camps in the district, particularly at night. It was hoped, however, said Ai"Rosie, to put into use five more circuits between Hamilton and Auckland before Christinas.
