DENTAL STUDENTS

APPEALS AGAINST SERVICE ACTION BY DEPARTMENT (0.C.) _ DUNEDIN. Tuesday The position of dental students who have been called up for overseas service was outlined by the dean of the dental faculty, Dr. R. B. Dodds, in a letter to the Council of the University of Otago to-day. Dr. Dodds explained that appeals would be lodged for all students called up in the overseas ballot with the exception of those in the first or intermediate year. The Health Department would make the usual identification inquiries through the medical officer of health, and would require evidence from the dean in the form of a certificate reporting satisfactory progress in each case. Bona-fide second, third, fourth and fifth-year students whose academic progress was satisfactory would be appealed for by the Health Department, and the appeals would be adjourned sine die with a provision that _tha students did service with an A.S.C. unit or the Medical Corps. First-year students over the age of 21 could appeal on their own behalf on any grounds, but would not be supported by the Health Department. Dr. Dodds said students of at least second-year status who had enlisted m the Air Force and who were satisfactory would not be called up.
