TRANSPORT ALLOWANCE
HOME GUARD REQUEST ] REFUSAL BY GOVERNMENT (0.c.) WHAXGAREI, Tuesday The Whangarei district Home Guard committee at its final meeting received a replv from the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, to a request that a special transport allowance should lie paid to guardsmen using motor vehicles to attend parades. Mr. Jones said that if the request for the travelling allowance to all guardsmen using motor vehicles were agreed to, many difficult problems would be raised. It was impossible for the Government to agree to the proposal at the present time. The reply was not satisfactory to the committee. It was pointed out that in addition to payment for parades members of the National Military Reserve received transport expenses. In view of the fact that the Home Guard was now incorporated in the armed forces it was decided to write to the Minister again requesting that the travelling allowances paid to the National Military Reserve be granted to the Homo Guard. With the incorporation of the Home Guard under military regulations the committee has decided to disbaud.
