FROST AT GISBORNE

EARLY VEGETABLES SUFFER POTATOES AND® TOMATOES (0.C.) GISBORNE, Tuesday A frost of 8 degrees this morning caused the heaviest and most widespread damage for many years. Particularly large crops of early potatoes throughout the district were doing well, but judging from reports few of them escaped, and in many cases the crop is a total Joss. Encouraged by the warm weather of recent weeks, the more tender of the summer crops, notably beans and tomatoes. had been planted, and these stood a poor chance of survival. Orchardists are concerned at the possible damage to fruit trees, but the eany indications are that stone fruit generally escaped, while pip fruit is not sufficiently advanced to suffer.
