LESS PETROL
PRIVATE MOTORISTS CUT OF 25 PER CENT LICENCES TO BE REVIEWED (S R.) WELLIXGTON, Thursday A 2'i per cent cut in the petrol allocation for private motorists for August and September was announced to-day by the Minister of Supply, the Hon. P. G. Sullivan. He said that nil petrol licences would also be reviewed. The Minister said that in view of the present international situation the Government was reluctantly compelled to reduce New Zealand's consumption of oil fuel. For the next two months private motorists would be allowed three coupons, numbered 5, 6 and 7. He added that instructions had also been issued for a review of all petrol licences with a view to making a considerable reduction in consumption. "Although 1 am not at liberty to give the full reasons for the action being taken, the people of New Zealand may rest assured that the Government has considered all possible alternatives, but lias no option but to take the action mentioned," Mr. Sullivan said. "I. would ask all consumers of oil fuel to accept these reductions in the knowledge that by doing so they are materially helping not only New Zealand but the whole Empire's war effort."

REGISTRATIONS FOR YEAR fS.T'.) WELLINGTON, Thursday I'lie Postmaster-General, the Hon. P. 0. Webb, said to-dav that the licensing of all typos of motor vehicles to the pTtri of .June showed nn increase over the figures to .Tone, 1940. A total of 250,161 motor vehicles had boon licensed this year to the end of June. This was an increase of 6624, or 2.65 per cent, over the corresponding figures a year n r ro.
Cars licensed totalled 182.551, an increase of 31').''; commercial vehicles totalled 62.>59. an increase of .'5165, and motor-cycles totalled 10,751, an increase of 26.
