INSTITUTE COUNCIL
TRIBUTE TO LATE MEMBER MR. J. A. POND'S LONG SERVICE Regret at the death of its senior member, Mr. J. A. Pond, who joined the society in 1873 and completed 68 years of continuous membership, was recorded at a meeting of the council of the Auckland Institute and Museum yesterday. Mr. Pond was a.council member from 1879 to 1910 and was president in 1885. Appreciation of his valuable and whole-hearted service to the institute and to research was also recorded, ft was also decided to record the council's regret at the death of Mr. R. M. Laing. of Christchurch, and its appreciation of his distinguished services to education and science in New Zealand. % The council congratulated Dr. H. H. Allan on his award of the Hutton Medal of the Royal Society of New Zealand. Dr. H. J. Finlay on his award of the Hector Medal and Dr. R. A. Fall a on his election to fellowship of the Royal Society of Few Zealand. The director of the Auckland Institute and Museum, Mr. Gilbert riArchey, was congratulated for bis election as president of the Royal Society "of New Zealand, and was complimented", on his recentlypublished work on the moa.
