LARGE GAIN IN SEATS

MR. COAKLEY TOPS POLL The outstanding feature of the election of members of the Auckland City j Council was the almost complete defeat. of the official Labour ticket. In all there were -18 candidates for the 21 scats, and of those 21 were put forward by the Citizens and Ratepayers' Association and a similar number by | the Labour Party. The Citizens' Association secured the return of 20 of ; its candidates, and the Labour I'arly | won only one seat:, Mrs. ,M. M. Drcaver, | a retiring member of the council, being ! re-oleeted. ! Three other silting members who ] sought, re-election on the Labour ticket j were rejected, these being Messrs. \V. i T. Anderton, M.l\, l\ Carr, M.l'., ami 1.1. .1. Sullivan. Light of the Citizens' ; Association representatives who sat in the previous council and sought re-elec-tion were returned. Mr. .1. L. Coakley, chairman of the I Parks Committee in the.last council, I topped the poll with ltj,! 1 !)! votes, less than 200 votes ahead of Mr. A. S. j Hailey, who had that honour in IU-'iS. HARBOUR CONTROL ONLY TWO PHAXOES ; CITY MEMBERS RETURNED FORMER CHAIRMAN BEATEN Only two changes wore made in the Auckland Harbour Board personnel. .Mr. C. G. Macindoe. a former chairman, one of the representatives of payers of dues on ships, was defeated by Mr. W. H. McCallum, who lost his seat in 1938 to .Mr. F. H. Giflford. The latter was again returned on this occasion. The other change was for the combined Hamilton, Ngaruawahia district: seat. .Air. J. 11. Fow, a former .Mayor of Hamilton, succeeding Mr. C. A. 35arrell, M.P., who did not seek re-elec-tion. All four sitting members in the. city area were returned. Mr. J. 15. Donald topping tile poll. The successful candidates were three Citizens' representatives and one Labour nominee, Mr. J. •Saycgh. Three other Labour candidates and one Citizens' nominee were defeated. The present chairman of the board, Mr. Hendry Luke, was returned by the combined Mount Albert-Mount Eden district with a vote more than | double that of his Labour opponent, | the Hon. B. Martin. M.L.C. Another Labour defeat was recorded J in the combined district of the four North Shore boroughs, Mr. W. B. Darlow being re-elected with the overwhelming majority of .'SBOB votes over the only other candidate, Mr. E. .T. Sinel, the official Labour representative.
