HOSPITAL BOARD

THE EE NEW MEMBERS

RE-ELEC'TION OF CHAIRMAN

SEAT LOST BY LABOUR

I Three new members were returned to the Auckland Hospital Board, all taking the place of sitting members, who did not seek re-election. The only change in the city area was the election of .Mr. J. J. .Kingston, a Citizens' representative, who succeeded to the seat formerly held for Labour bv l)r. J. P. Hastings, who did not go to the poll. The strength of the city representation thus becomes three Citizens' representatives and two Labour members, reversing the position that obtained before the election. Three Labour candidates, two Citizens' representatives and one Communist were unsuccessful. The retiring chairman, Mr. A. J. Moody, retained his seat from a Labour candidate, Mr. R. Mac Donald, by 131 votes on the provisional count in the combined district of One Tree Hill, Mount Roskill, Mount Wellington and Pamnure. In the 1938 election, when the total vote was substantially higher, Mr. Moody had a majority of 1055 votes over the same opponent. The two retiring members for the combined Mount Eden, Mount Albert, Newmarket, Onehunga, New Lynn and JKllcrslie district, Messrs. J. H. Kin near and E. H. Potter, had a comfortable win over their three women opponents, two of whom, Mrs. A. S. Bevan and Mrs. E. E. Snookes, were Labour nominees. Mrs. M. B. Soljak, by obtaining less than an eighth of the votes cast for the lowest successful candidate, forfeited her deposit. Mrs. Bevan polled well, particularly in Mount Albert and in some of the smaller boroughs. For the North Shore boroughs, the Mayor of Takapuna. Mr. J. Gitiniven, won the seat formerly held by Mr. W. K. Howitt, who did not seek re-elec-tion. The seat for the Manukau-Ota-huhii area, which was not sought by the sitting member, the Rev. W. C. Wood, was won by Mr. V. M. Tracey. This was much smaller | than in 1938 when the informal votes ! numbered 4 18. However, on that. ; occasion the total of the votes recorded j was about one-third greater. In the j course of the official count, which starts j to-day, these informal votes will be ' given close scrutiny and it. is possible : that some of these may be allowed as valid by the returning officer. However, they can make no difference to the result of the mayoral election. In the council poll there were <l5B votes classed as informal and as there is only a small margin between some of those close to the border dividing the successful and unsuccessful, it. is likely that if any large number is allowed there may be some adjustment of positions. | A number of votes were also made by j declaration on the claims of those who I held that they were entitled to vote, although not on the roll. These will also be the subject of scrutiny before being added to the respective totals.
