WIN FOR MR. ALLUM

MAJORITY OF 1332 VOTES

DEFEAT OF MR. SAYEGH

The contest for the Auckland City Mayoralty resulted in the election of Mr. J. A; ('. Allum, the retiring deputymayor, a lid the candidate endorsed by the Citizens "and Ratepayers' Association. With a vote of 16,244, he had a majority of l.'W2 over Mr. J. Sayegh, the Labour candidate, his most serious rival. Mr. Sayegh has ior many years been a member of the City Council and- this was his third unsuccessful attempt to become Mayor. This time he w'as not a candidate for the council and thus ceases to be a member of that body. Mr. Charles Bailey, formerly .a. Labour member of the City Council, contested the Mayoralty as an. Independent and gained only 1004 votes, while Mr. J. ' \V. Payne polled 218 votes. The majority given to Mr. Allum over his Labour opponent is reflected in the election of members of the City Council, / where, 'on the provisional count, there will be 20 Citizens' Association members and only one Labour representative, Mrs. M.
