YOUNG MAN ATTACKED SURFERS DASH TO RESCUE (Received December 2?). s.rtr> p.m.) SYDNEY, Dec. 2« Attacked by a shark in shallow water at Stockton Beach, near Newcastle, to-day. Air. Clarence Hammond, aged L'-'i, died as he was being taken from the water by two surfers, who dashed unhesitatingly to his aid. At the time the shark attacked Mr. Hammond was standing waist-deep about 50 yards I'rom the shore. The first hint of tragedy came when one of the sorters, who had leit Mr. Hammond to shoot the breakers about .'iOyds. further out, heard his friend's agonised cry. He and a bather who was in the surf belt, called a warning to others, and reached the dying man together. The victim never had a chance. River fresh had muddied the water, and also brought down many small fish on which the sharks feed. r l he maneater apparently made only one attack. No fin was seen, but the teeth marks showed that it was a big shark. This is the first surf tragedy in New South Wales this season.
