STORM DIVERTED
BAIN IN AUCKLAND RISE IN BAROMETER HIGH TEMPERATURES PREVAIL Heavy rain fell in Auckland yesterday, but the severe storm which was ex-pec-ted to cross the North Island between Auckland and New Plymouth was diverted and moved in a south-easterly direction toward Cook Strait. A fresh north-east wind yesterday turned to the south-west and the barometer rose steadily from 29.38 in. at two o'clock yesterday afternoon to 30.03 in. at midnight. Wet, squally conditions continued last night, however. Humid conditions accompanied high temperatures yesterday when the maximum was 73 degrees and the minimum 62 degrees. Owing to the change in the course of the storm only moderate falls of rain were experienced in the Auckland province. The wind was strongest at about four o'clock yesterday morning, and there was a large amount of salt in the rain, the windscreens of motor-cars being covered with it. The amount of rain for I the 24 hours ended midnight was .28in.
TARANAKI'S EXPERIENCE THUNDER AND LIGHTNING [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] NEW PLYMOUTH, Monday A severe thunder storm occurred in North Taranaki last night. Heavy thunder rattled houses and caused loss of sleep in many homes. Lightning several times upset electrical supply ffnd interrupted telephonic communication. In the 24 hours to 9 o'clock this morning 2.53 in. of rain "was recorded. Th under and lightning commenced shortly after 10 p.m. and were still going at o o'clock this morning, although the severe period was confined to the hoxirs between 1 and 3 o'clock.
