OLD TIMBER RAILWAY
The storms of many years have wrought havoc with the old timber railway on the west coast from Karekare to Whatipu. In a few places the trestle on which the lino was carried along the shore is to be seen, but the greater part of it has been buried in the sand or torn away by the breakers. On rocky headlands the rails, twisted by the force of the surf, still remain, while a tunnel through a peninsula of rock near Pararaha remains a lasting tribute to the engineers who built the line on this rugged coast.
