FALL AT HOSPITAL
ELDERLY PATIENT'S DEATH An inquest was opened yesterday by Mr. F. K. iHunt, coroner, into the death of Mr. Richard Morcombe Bowden, labourer, married, aged 83, of 8 Halesowen' Avenue, Mount Albert, who was a patient in the Auckland Hospital and fell from a window of Ward 1 on Sunday.
Evidence was given that deceased was admitted to hospital suffering from cfironic bronchitis. Early on Sunday morning he refused to allow a nurse to take his temperature. A few minutes after she left him she heard the sound of breaking glass and a patient calling out. She ran into the ward and saw deceased about to fall through the window. She caught him by the ankle, but was unable to prevent him from falling, and he suffered fatal head injuries. A relative testified that when he last saw deceased on Friday he was in good spirits and gave no indication of intention to take his life. > The inquest was adjourned sine die.
