AIR RAID VICTIMS

HELP FOE LONDONEES # " FUND NOW TOTALS £7llO FURTHER CONTRIBUTIONS MADE Contributions amounting to £1056 13s 4d were received yesterday by the New Zealand Herald toward the Auckland Provincial Patriotic Council's quota of the £IOO,OOO which;has been sent from New Zealand to the . Lord Mayor of London ' toward aiding victims of the German air raids. The day's total brings the amount so far received by the Herald to £7llO 7s 3d. How keen people throughout the province are to show their sympathy with London's air-raid victims was summed up vividly in a letter sent by one of yesterday's donors. Last February, he said, ho placed £1 which ho had just earned in the pocket of a suit that ho later put in a suitcase in his car. While lie was at work the suitcase was stolen. On Sunday he found his suitcase lying in a patch of scrub and the £1 note was still safely in the pocket where he had put it. "We are glad to send it to help others worse off than wo are," ho said, "and we are very pleased that it allows us to help the London fund, for it would have been impossible otherwise." The same spirit is behind all the gifts. In the letters which, contain comment the writer's intense sympathy with the people of Britain is uppermost. It is also obvious in a great many cases that people are sending money which they could ill afford if the call were less important or worthy. Contributions to the fund may be sent by post or paid direct at the Herald Office. Those forwarded by mail should bo accompanied by precise instructions as to tliQ form of acknowledgment desired. To ensure accuracy, the name or initials should be written in block letters. The following further subscriptions are acknowledged:— e s d Previously acknowledged .. 8053 13 11 L. D. LAND TOWARD FUND OFFER FROM THE COUNTRY "Here is an opportunity for an Aucklander," remarked a country member of the Auckland Provincial Patriotic Council last night when it was reported that Mr. George Spencer, of Te Whitu, v liad offered to present three freehold sections in the township of Turua, near Thames, comprising threequarters of an acre, to the provincial fund for London relief, on condition that someone in Auckland would present a section for the same purpose. The offer was referred to the standing committee, with power to act.
