MARRIAGE BY PROXY
SOLDIERS OVERSEAS PROPOSAL DISCUSSED [by telegraph—own correspondent] WELLINGTON, Thursday A proposal that the marriage laws should be amended to permit of soldiers serving overseas being married by proxy was discussed by the Wellington Provincial Patriotic Council. The Mayor of Wellington, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, said he understood that at present the only people who could be married by proxy were Royalty. So much of the most important business of life was done by correspondence that it seemed reasonable one should be able to get married also by correspondence. Why should not the Navy also benefit by the scheme? one member asked. Would it be possible to untie the knot again by correspondence? Could one bo a co-respondent by correspondence. It was decided that the subject required further consideration before any action could be taken.
