NEW AMERICAN SERVICE FIRST TRIP FROM NEW YORK (Received April I, 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, March 31 A direct'service between New York and Europe was inaugurated to-day by Pan American Airways. The flying time from La Guardia airport is scheduled at 24 hours. The company hopes to start a daily service before the end of the year, and a sub-stratosphefe service of 12 hours' flying time within three years. BRITAIN TO AFRICA EXTENSION OF SERVICE (Received April 1, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. March 31 An extended Empire flying-boat service to South Africa will be commenced this week. At the outbreak of the war the Empire air services to Africa were reduced to n once weekly return flight to Durban and a once weekly return flight to Kisumu. It has now been decided to extend the Kisumu service to Durban, thus restoring the flying-boat services to South Africa to their pre-war frequency. To-day Imperial Airways and British Airways are merged into one organisation —the British Overseas Airways Corporation—under whose control all the Empire air mail 1 services are conducted.
