TUATARA LIZARD
DISCOVERY AT NORTHCOTE EARLIER FIND RECALLED , ■ A fine specimen of the tuatara lizard lias been found in a tidal creek at Northcote. The lizard, which is about 18in. long, is in excellent condition. A similar discovery was made in the same locality about IS months ago. Children swimming in the creek noticed the lizard, and a boy of 10 subsequently caught it. It has been offered as an exhibit to the Auckland Zoo, where there are already sever.il specimens. Tuatara lizards have been rarely found on the mainland for many years, being mainly confined to small islands off the North Auckland coast and to Stephen's Island, in Cook Strait. The specimen found at Northcote about 18 months ago was discovered by three boys ill a pit hidden by undergrowth and was given to the zoo. A. smaller specimen than the latest discovery,- it was slightly over 12in. in length.
