WORK AT AVONDALE MERCURY BAY IMPRESSES SILVER EAGLE GOES NICELY GOLD VAALS IN GOOD ORDER BY BOBRIKOFF Without, recording fast times, horses to work well in tlio final trials at <Avondale on Saturday were Kathbellu, Mercury Bay, Silver Eagle and Hunter's Night.. The course proper, with the trestles out 50ft., was available, conditions being excellent. Silver Eagle (Goldfinch) and Clipper (Cougliey) kept on terms over seven furlongs in 135 2-5, running the last half-mile m 51 3-ss. Both were going well throughout, particularly Silver Eagle, who can be expected to give a good account of Inmselt in the Titirangi Handicap to-day. Royal Faukcs (Maria) sprinted the last three furlongs of his work in 40 l-ss. Sir r Robin (Ferguson) worked over a mile, casing up over the concluding stages to run the last seven furlongs in 1.41. Valley Maid (Aitken) finished in front of Go Id on Tom (Goldfinch) at the end of live furlongs in 1.6 3-5. Neither was ridden out. Gold Yaals (Maria), came homo the iust three furlongs of his work in 30s. Ho moved freely and is bearing a very muscular appearance. Kathbellu (Atkins), was under a good hold while running five furlongs in 1.0 1-5, the last three in 38 4-ss. She impressed by the manner in which she accomplished her task and should make a bold showing in the Railway Handicap, in spite of her weight. Hackenscliniidt (Henderson) led Eastern Heir (Mclnally) over half a mile in 51s. Eastern Heir was decidedly sore. Miss To Ivoura (Thomson) did better than Valerian (Coupe) over six furlongs in 1.21. Chikara (Maria) and a companion ran tlio Inst three furlongs of their work in 40s. Chikara worked really well and drew attention to his prospects in the Avondale Hurdles. Midland (Goldfinch) displayed dash in easily accounting for Jewelled Girdle (Marin) over six furlongs in 1.20 1-5. Slight, improvement in his jumping would make Midland difficult to beat in the Avondale Hurdles. Hunter's Night (Skiffington), Fairfield CO. Mclnally) and Stokowski (Thomson) were in that order at the end of five furlongs in 1.5 2-5, after running the. • last three in 3S 3-ss. Hunter's Night finished attractively and sives the impression that ho is much improved. Stokowski shows signs of being affected in the wind. Pantheist (Mclnally) covered half a milo in 51s. Carrying nearly lost, Mercury Bay (Fergnsion) impressed by sprinting three furlongs smartly in 37 3-5s without being ridden out. Mil de Mer (McJnall.v) had little difficulty in beating Innovation (Thomson) over half a mile in 53 1-59. Yogi (Aitken) concluded strong work over two rounds by sprinting up the straight. He galloped six furlongs on Friday and is in great fettle. • Racpata and Serenala performed useful tasks over a couple.of rounds. Serenala looks very fit and will disappoint if she fails to race prominently in the Nolan Handicap. As he has not. recovered completely from the effects of the fall he had from Kathbellu before Easter, P. Atkins will be unable to ride at Avondale. Atkins rodo Kathbella work on Saturday morning, but complained of being unwell afterward, and it may bo some time before ho resumes raco riding. HASTINGS EFFORTS DAINTY DELL GOES FAST [BY TKLUGUAI'H —OWN COHItKSt'ONDKiS'f] HASTINGS, Saturday There was not a great deal of fast work' at Hastings this morning, whon tlio plough was used. Shani, having her first gallop sinco an operation for respiratory trouble, revealed early possibilities by dashing over three fur-longs-smartly. Endorsement also showed fine speed Over the same distance. This filly can now bo classed among the best sprinters in Hawko's Bay. Diana Totrix, who iH now out of hack class, impressed by the manner in which she held Kalika over five furlongs in 1.5. Black Out, who is engaged in tlio Cloverlea Nursery Handicap at Awapuni on Thursday, was not impressive while running four furlongs in =52 2-ss. Authoress and Lindrum worked once rqund in 1.41, galloping evenly and finishing resolutely, with Authoress holding the dual Foilding winner safely at tlio end. She may race well at the Manawatu meeting. Dainty Dell, n rapidly-improving hack, who will race on tlio second day at Awapuni, was the best of the morning at five furlongs, when she beat Black Majesty narrowly in 1..3. The first two furlongs wero run in 24 2-oS. Other gallops were:—Four furlongs: Lady Garragh and I sis. 565. Five furlongs: Proclamation and Mother-in-Law, 1.5; Myology and Wild Wind, 1.7. Six furlongs: Etla and Attractive, 1.10; Gold Ballad, 1.20. Onco round: Padishah and Soho, 1.48. Soho shows every indication of an early roturn to form.
