EPSOM ACTIVITIES

NAWTON PABEISH FIT MILE AND A-QUARTER IN 2.47 GOOD TRIAL BY SWEET ALOES BY ABAYDOS " With the Thames trotting meeting taking place this week-end, this to be followed by meetings at Cambridge, Clriudelands and Epsom, there was renewed activity at Alexandra Park on Saturday. Training honours rested with Nawton J'arrisli, who decisively defeated Sir Frank over a mile and aqnarter in 2.47, to run the last halfmile in 1.5. Sir Frank recorded 2.48 and 1.6. Oilier fine sprint efforts were by Sweot •Aloes, 1.0 3-5 i Handicapper, 1.0 4-o; Auto Lad, Frank Best, 1.7; Bingen's Best, 1.7 2-5; Lady Vasclyne, 1.8; Atarau Queen. 1.8 3-5. The dirt track harrowed out well, to provido good footing. With the exception of Nawton Parrish and Sir Frank, the horses worked the reverse way. , j Activities ceased for 10 minutes at nine o'clock as a mark of respect to the memory of the late ltt. Hon. M. J. Savage. Sir Frank (J. McKendrick) jumped away in front of Nawton Parrish (A. McGarry) from the mile and a-auarter and, setting a lively pace, be led at tlio six furlongs in 1.42. After passing the mile in 2.15, Nawton Parrish drew level and he won in 2.47- —a very smart effort. Nawton Parrish lias done wcli since the February meeting and demonstrated his speed in sprinting the last two furlongs in 325. Sir Frank, who is gross iu condition, was not discredited in his showing. Frank Best Improving Frank Best (W. H. Andrews) went away 4y a s behind Bingen's Best (J. Garnett) to bo alongside her at the end of a mile and ahalf in 3.29. Frank Best, who is improving with each work-out, ran the last mile in 2.10. Bingen's Best, after a short respite, looks in splendid condition. She recorded 2.17 2-5 for the last mile. Auto Lad (W. Fleming) Sweet Aloes (S. M. August) and Handicapper (G. H. Siubbs) went.from a standing start. The last-named led throughout a mile . and a-half in S:ao. the first mile taking 2.2!) 1-5. Ho did not have much to spare at tlie end from Sweet Aloes, who finished very resolutely oyer the last few furlongs, giving an impressive display. Auto Lad, who was not far behind, paced in most determined fashion. The Auto Maehineo three-year-old has fined down, and is making steady progress. . .Joanna (J. J. Kennerloy) retired after accompanying Bournemouth (E. N. Kennerloy) to the mile' in 2.32 ( the latter reaching the mil" and a-half in 3.15 3-5. Bournemouth looks none the worse for his racing on the Taranaki cricuit. Joanna is ari' aged trotting marc by G rattan Loyal—Anna Lincoln, and was twice placed at "VVestport last season. Young Rodney (G. H. Stuhbs) trotted a mile and a-half at a 2.30 rate, stepping the last three furlongs solidly in 545. He has not raced for some time, and was very robust when taken in hand by Stubbs. He is assuming racing shape. Moana Tama All the Way Moan a Tama (G. H&dfield), and Young Parrv (P. Ellis) went away four seconds ahead of Atarau Queen (E. N. Kennerley) and Lady Vasclyno (J. .T. Kennerley) and, going quickly to the lead, Moana Tama remained in front, to win in 4.55. lie ran the first mile ill 2.31 3-5 and the last half-mile in 1.10. Atarau Queen, who was close up at the finish, recorded 4.53 1-5, the last mile in 2.22. She is related to Atarau King, and has done her racing on the West Coast of the South Island. \ Lady Vasclyne, who has not been overtaxed since the Manawatu meeting, came home solidly oven the last half-mile. Young Parr,\, who drifted in the first mile, was also running on well. Mnnga Tangi (C. M. Morrison) worked frcel/ over a mile and a-half. He ran the last mile in 2.20, each half in 1.10. Munga Tangi is very bright and in splendid condition for more serious tasks. Star Pronto (B. Dyer) ran the last six furlongs of a mile and three-quarters at a 2.20 rate. The free-legged pacer- has not looked so well for some time, and may regain his true form. Totara Park (C. M. Morrison) was not required to dc better than a 2.<10 rate while trotting two miles. The Worthy Bingen mare has furnished nicely and reached the stage where improvement can be expected. Jewel Crest (N. Smith) and Rara Avis (A. Walker) were not after time while trotting three circuits. Jewel Crest, who previously raced as a pacer, is being trainsd at the trotting gait by T. Roe. Para Avis is well bred, being by Peter Bingen from Comedian, by Author Dillon. He has had very little race experience, and was for a time trained at Hamilton by C. Moran and C. R. Wood. Northern Smile Stays On Bronze King (E. N. Kennerley), Honey Pot (C. Hadfield), Kewpie's Bingen (P. Ellis), Repose (J. J. Kennerley), Hori Binpen (E. R. Smith) and Northern Smile (J. Little) went away at intervals of one second, but, running to the lead after five furlongs,_ Northern Smile was never headed, to win decisively from Kewpie's Bingen, in 4.52 3-5. She ran the first mile in 2.20, and the final half-mile in 1.12 3-5. Northern Smile, pulled hard until she reached the front, when she paced smoothly and stayed on much better than previously . Kewpie's Bingen did best of the remainder, running on solidly to record 4.55. He derived benofit from racing at New Plymouth and Hawera. Hori Bingen. who has not been up long from a lengthy spell, gave a creditable showing. , , _ Glen Bingen (J. E. Scagar) conceded five seconds' start to Matawah (D. Cook). Port Chalmers (T. Roe), Frank Redmond (A. Brown), Jimmy Parrish (A. O. Hill) and Might Surprise (W. Fleming). After a good finish with Frank Redmond, who broke a furlong from home, and Jimmy Parrish, Glen Bingen won in 3.44 4-5, trotting the last half-rnilo in 1.12 4-5. • Frank Redmond showed improvement on earlier displays and gave the impression that he will develop into a useful trotter. The honours were with Jimmy Parrish, a big raw gelding by Great Parrish—Lady Eva. He was having his first run in company, and, going from a stand, was at a disadvantage hi the early part. Trotting very solidly Jimmy Parrish finished very close to Glen Bingen and Frank Redmond. Might Surprise lost a deal of ground by a break in the first quarter, but trotted usefully afterward. Matawall and Port Chalmers made several mistakes. , •, ' ■ Silk Lady (W. H. Andrews) displayed vcoenness when working three laps unhoppled. Princess Llnnctt. (J. McKendrick) ran a mile and a-quarter smoothly at a 2.30 rate, sprinting the last, three furlongs in 545. Miss dc •\ngcl (C. Hadfield) was given an ens.v task. She is a sister to Amywyn, and appears very green.
