EVENTS ON SATURDAY MANUKAU CLUB'S HANDICAP SUCCESS OF THE AQUILA Ideal conditions prevailed for the harbour races of the M.mukau Yacht and Motor-boat Club, a steady southwest breeze enabling the boats to finish the courses in good time. There were six starters in the general handicap race for yachts, and these were started at 2 p.m. on the Mark Foy system, the handicaps being given at the start. Pandora was first away, and the others followed at their respective times. Pandora maintained her lead over the first round, but Aquila and Marie Dawn improved their positions, passing Mere. Tlio direction of the wind save tlm boats a beat out to the mark off Waikowhai, with a flat run back on_ the second round. Aquila, which worked the Manprero shore, fared better than Marie Dawn, which stood into the Onehunga shore, after meeting with littlo success in the centro of the channel. Marere rounded the bottom mark with a littlo to spare from Aquila, and tho pair slatted a stood duel coming up harbour, Aquila crossing tho line 59s ahead of her rival, with Mario Dawn nearly 2m astern. The result was:—Aquila, 3m, 1; Marcro, 15m, 2; Marie Dawn, scr, 3. Z Class. —There were iiino starters in this class, and from a good start Firefly was first to show out, with Zippa close up and the rest bunched. There was little between them o'i the first round, where Valeta, Firefly, Leone, Astra and Flirt rounded tho wrong mark, to sail a shorter course than had been decided at tho club meeting during tho week, thereby earning disqualification. The result on corrected times was: —• Sheet a.. 7m, I; Zippa, 3m, 2. Two motor-boats started in llv power event, and there was little between them at the bottom mark, and over the second round "Wainiea could not shake off the tenacious Louana. The result on corrected times place Louana, 13m Jss, first. The officials in charpre of tho racinc were Messrs. A. Osborne, A. McLeod and W. Pickering.
CRUISING CLUB RACES MARINA AND ALOMA WIN Fifteen yachts competed in two general handicap races of tho Manukau Cruising Club and provided a fino spectacle as both classes canio up to the finishing line with spinnakers drawing well. A Class. —Eight boats started, Eclipse being first to cross, with Marina, Mystery, Ttnnui and Sirona in that .order. Paroro had improved her position on completion of tho first round, with Sirona close astern. These two boats opened up a big gap on tho others, and there was a good tussle between Eclipse, Mystery and Maramii. After rounding the last mark off tho wharf, Mystery gybed, and came up into the wind and. after some delay, retired. The result on corrected times was: — Marina, ISm 30s, 1; Eclipse, 25m, 2: Maranui. 23m, 11. B Class.—Topsy was first away from Alcrte and Josotto, with tho other four bunched. Karoro and Aloma outsailed the others on the first round, and Karoro increased her load on the second round, while Topsy and Vigilant dropped a long way astern. * The result on corrected times was:—Aloma. Sm 30s. 1; Josette, 9m, 2; Karoro lm, 3. The officers of tho day were Messrs. .J. Moir, G. Smith, \V. Cla.vdon and A. Somervell.
