UPHOLSTERERS BUSY
SUGGESTED REASONS ANTICIPATING SHORTAGES t - Considerable activity in the upholstery business is noted by a number of Auckland firms at present. In particular there is a special demand for the re-covering of suites of furniture. Two reasons are offered for this satisfactory state of affairs. The head of one large furnishing firm pointed out that during the hard times several j-ears ago a large amount of cheap furniture of poor quality was sold. INaturally this has not stood the test of time very we'd and much of it is now coming back for repairs and renewal. During the slump people tended to put off furniture repairs until a more (suitable time, and many are finding that that time has now arrived. -Another factor that is undoubtedly operating is the anticipation in the minds or, many that there will be a developing shortage of suitable covering materials, accompanied by higher prices. "Our upholstery department has been busy for the last few months;" said the representative of a city firm yesterday, "largely on account of people who are trying to anticipate a coming shortage, but we have not had anything of a boom." '' . ... "All our upholßterers are engaged," said the -head of a furnishing department, "but there is not any great rush. The position is going to be controlled later by the shortage of covering materials on account or the import restrictions, and people are now taking advantage of the stocks while they last." The opinion that there would be a slackening in this particular line of business after Easter was expressed by one man.
