FARM PRODUCTION
ECONOMIC POSITION MR. H V ,M. RUSHWORTH'S VIEW [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Saturday The need for adjustments to be made in the economic position of farming if the Dominion was to fulfil its undertaking to supply increased primary produce to Britain was emphasised by Mr. H. M. Rushwortli, Auckland provincial president of the Farmers' Union, at a meeting of the Waikato executive of the union to-day. "The last thing the farmer wants to do is to make any profit out of the war," said Mr. Rushwortli. "hut there is a wide, gap between profiteering and the recovery of costs. At present the farmer is being compressed between walls of fixed prices and rising costs." In the first place the price for the produce must cover the financial cost, and adequate and efficient labour should be provided, said the speaker. Perhaps", it might be necessary to create a land | army under military organisation. Consideration should also be given to the post-war period and an undertaking should be sought from the Imperial authorities that there would be no suggestion of quotas until the Dominion could rearrange its national life after the heightened wa: effort.
