POSITION OF MOTORISTS UNEXPECTED BOMBSHELL "MORALE OF THE PEOPLE" [from our OWN correspondent] HAMILTON, Wednesday "Personally, I do not think that th© extra 4d a gallon petrol tax was for defence purposes," said Mr. F. G. Farrell, president of the council of the Automobile Association (Auckland), when speaking at a meeting in Hamilton last night. Mr. Farrell said that when the petrol restrictions were announced, the tax increase was forgotten by most motorists, but the association would still continue to make representations for the repeal of the tax. "The petrol restrictions caino as a bombshell to the motoring community," continued Mr. Farrell. "I can hardly believe that due consideration can have been given to the question before the restrictions were introduced. They created havoc in*teverything. Business in the motor trade fell away, and it was chaos everywhere." Mr. Farrell added that representations for the repeal of the restrictions had been made by the association from time to time, and since then the restrictions had gradually been relaxed. In the opinion of the council, motoring was necessary as a recreation to keep up the morale of the people.
