PRICE OF PETROL INCREASEJTO-DAY GOVERNMENT SANCTION STEELING AND DOLLAR [I)V TKIYKCiRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Wednesday .As from to-morrow morning motor spirit throughout New Zealand will cost an extra penny a gallon. r lhis announcement was made to-night by a representative of the oil companies. Full details of the companies' increased costs were submitted to the Department of Industries and Commerce, which, after a close investigation, approved of the increase. Iho requisite amending regulations Were gazetted to-night and will take effect immediately. ■ The increase is stated to bo entirely duo to the depreciated value of sterling in relation to the dollar. The retail price for super grade petrol in Wellington will now be 2s sd, and for standard grades, 2s 4d. At a late hour last night Auckland service stations had received no_ information about the change in prices. Attendants at all night service stations had not been instructed to introduce the increased price this morning, although it was expected that such instructions would be given immediately proprietors became aware of the change. So far as could be learned the increase was a complete surprise to the retail trade at this stage.
