PIKE AS TRAINER GOOD DAY AT MOOREFI ELD COORANGA'S DOOMBEN CUP [from our own coukkspoxoent] SYDNEY, Jnly 10 A former champion jockey, J. E. Pike, is training an apprentice, L. Fell, who may one day take up the mantle of his master. Pike had a good day at Moorefield last Saturday, winning two races, and he should have made tho tally three. Fell scored on both tho winners, the leading rider, E. McMenamin, being on the beaten stable representative. Fell has plenty of determination. He rode two different types of race, leading all the way on Grey Derby but driving Hole in One from a long way back. Giant Killer completed a spectacular double last Saturday for Melbourne's master of junipers; W. Burke. Burke already had won the National Hurdles with Green Capo, who last year won tho Steeplechase. Giant Killer scored an easy victory in the big steeplechase this year, but until a fortnight beforo he was a maiden steeplechaser. Cooranga's success in the rich Doomben Cup on Saturday completed tho Queensland winter double for New South Wales. Cooranga is a high-class maro and, as she will not be rehandicapped for the big spring events, slio will be one of tho early favourites. Mr. E. J. Watt and G. Price had hopes of winning the Doomben Cup with tho Beau Pero colt The Squire. He ran an excellent nice, but liis best ivjis <i closo fourth. POINT-TO-POINT RACES MEETING AT WAVERLEY [BY TELEGRAPH: —OWN CORRESPONDENT] NEW PLYMOUTH, Monday Tho Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Club's annual point-to-point meeting was hold at Waverley on Saturday. It was at this meeting in the past that Flower Bag, Don Erma, Cardhu, Hoseinount, Hneremai and others mado their debuts. On Saturday, Gay Maid scored easily in tho Tally Ho Steeplechase. She went to tho front at half-way, and it was a runaway victory. Her jumping throughout was good. Gay Maid is a ten-year-old mare by Arausio from Gladsheim, by Gay Lad from Freya, by Birkenhead. Gladsheim was half-sister to the useful steeplechaser Woden. Daniel Boone, a good typo of hunter, was second. Ararata comfortably accounted for his opponents in the Heavy-weight Steeplechase. The third winner, After Dark, put up a. sound performance in tho light-weight event. Me carried tho colours of Mr. S. Patterson, Wanganui, who used to race Just An Idea. Mr. K. McK, Duncan, Hunterville. produced' Battle Pomp, by Pombo) from Battle Torque, in the light-weight event, but ho ran poorly.
