GOODWILL MATCH AUCKLAND GRAMMAR WINS WELLINGTON COLLEGE'S VISIT Victory by seven points to three was gained by Auckland Grammar School over Wellington College in a Rugby football match played on tho Grammar School's ground yesterday morning as part of the goodwill visit of a large party of pupils from Wellington College. It was emphasised by school authorities that the game was' n friendly one, and no importance attached to tho result. The first ever to take placo between the two the match was witnessed by numerous pupils and old boys of both schools. There was strenuous forward play on a heavy ground, yet bright, open back movements were not lacking. The tackling was commendably solid, which accounts for the low score. Tho teams were oven at 3-all until lato in the second spell, when Chandler, Grammar's first five-eighths, kicked a field goal and placed his side four points ahead. Tho side succeeded in holding this advantage. During the first spell Wellington College, thanks to its forwards, kept play mostly in Grammar's territory, but failed to tako advantage of tho strong wind. Grammar twice narrowly missed scoring when possession of tho ball was lost on the lino. A penalty goal was kicked for Wellington by Vaughan, and at half-timo tho score was: —Wellington College, 3; Auckland Grammar School, 0. Playing with tho wind in the second spell Grammar dominated the play. Soon after the resumption tho Grammar backs swung into combined action, and their movement ended in a try by Higgs. For a considerable period Wellington remained near Grammar's twenty-five, but the defenders eventually repulsed the attack. Tho visiting forwards played sound football, especially Dalton, Reid, Jackson, McDonald and Wilson, winning most of the scrums and line-outs, whilo in tho loose they wero brilliant, and only tho dogged Wairarapa defence saved scores. The Hawke's Bay backs wore clever and tricky, and were much superior to tho Wairarapa rearguard. The best of the visiting backs wero Dyer, Moss, Fox and Devino. Peterson, Hatton and Denbee wero tho pick of the local backs. . There wero many thrilling incidents in the game, which at times was played at a fast pace. Hawke's Bay showed better form and was more skilled in the finer points of the game. In tho first spell. Fox and Devino scored tries for Hawke's Bay and Brunton kicked a penalty goal for Wairarapa. In tho second spell Wairarapa dominated tho play for a period, hut Hawke's Bay. by brilliant tactics, gined the upper hand and indulged in many thrilling movements.
