ELLERSLIE TRAINING CONDITIONS UNFAVOURABLE IMPERATOR AGAIN GOES WELL The No. 3 grass track was very heavy at Ellerslio on Saturday and tho fast work mainly consisted of short sprints. The sand was in fair order and the majority of horses performed useful tasks on this track. On the grass, Royal Message (Hearn) came home the last three furlongs of her work in 42 2-ss. An honest filly, W. Kirk's charge has thrived- during the last few weeks and she is likely to do well in the spring. The improving Bronze Eire (Hearn) ran an easy halfmile in 57 3-ns. Aero Queen (Sargent) took 57 2-5s in a similar task. Miss Appellant (Kearns) sprinted three furlongs in 42 2-ss. Her stablemate. Tooley Street (Kearns), recorded 41 4-ss. He hit out with great dash and could have done considerably better. The best time of the morning was recorded by the novice Imperator (Gemmell), who ran three furlongs in 39 l-ss. It was a smart effort under the conditions and the Sargon gelding would appear to have, possibilities. Oil the sand, Adsum (Simon) and Tupeotu (GemmcH) covered six furlongs in 1.25 4-5. Waitarma (L'ell) ran half a mile in 55 4-ss. Summary (Coon) and Beverley (Hearn) were associated! over three furlongs in 44 l-ss. Armarourt, who was formerly trained by S. M. August, is now a member of E. George's stable. Recent additions to the track workers at Ellerslio include Beeswing, Bide-a-Wee, Master Warden and Tea Chat. The rising two-vcar-old half-brother, by Lord Warden, to The Cardinal, who is. being educated by J. Chisholm. has had tho name Red Warden claimed for him.

NINE WINS FOR SEASON CONSISTENT FLEET STREET BLACK BANNER TO RESUME [BY TELKGRAPir —OWN COTtRESPONDENT] INVERCARGILL, Sunday Fleet Street recorded his ninth win this season when he was placed first in the Members' Handicap at Trcntham on Thursday, and he has been out of a place three times only in 20 starts this term. He was under offer early in the year at £7OO. hut the option was not exorcised. In the interval. Fleet'Strcet's winnings have amounted to CI 178. so a bargain was missed. Black Banner and Quitiopn! will probably have their next racing at the Wainiato Hunt meeting and both are in good order. Black Banner will have a change to hurdling at Wnimate. Strathalhyn has been kept in light exercise since the Dunedin winter meeting and he is looking well. In the same stable is the rising two-year-old by Nigger Minstrel from the Balboa mare, Mi ss Redowa. R. E. MeLellan is confining his attention to these two, but he will be bringing in most of his other horses next month and it is expected that he will have 14 or more to prepare for the new season, including Trebleack, who has been out for a long

time. Pandino was unable to act in the heavy going at Trentham. His stablemate, Gold Wren, was also unable to show his best form under the conditions there.

VERSATILE HORSEMAN With his success on Survov in tho Wellington Steeplechase, A. E. Ellis has now ridden winners in all the more important cross-country events in New Zealand. He has won tho Grand National on Snowfall and Thurina, tho Great Northern on Survoy, the Otago Steeplechase and the Great Western Steeplechase each twice on Pamplona, also tho Grand National Hurdles on Penury Hose, WharnclifTe and Padishah, and tho Great Northern Hurdles on Mister Gamp.
