COMMENT ON FORM

CHAT MAKES AMENDS LADY TINKLE IMPRESSIVE WAGNER AND CENTREPOISE [by TEMCIUI'H —I'UOM ARCH Kit] WELLINGTON, Saturday The Tnlavern Hurdles was won by the fourth fancy, Clint, who made amends for her disappointing effort in the High-weight Handicap on Thursday. Chat moved into the lead with Vantoon about half a mile from home, and she stayed soundly at the finish to heat him comfortably. She gave a good display of jumping in the bad ground, and is a solid stayer who should achieves further success as a hurdler. Vantoon ran another solid race, and his form was very consistent. Tutor was a long way back most of the way, and he made a great effort over the last three furlongs, just failing to reach second. Jewelled Girdle and Awhiowhio had every chnnco, but they were unable to trouble the placed horses. Export was closer at the finish than at any other stage, but Polity failed to show any finishing dash, after being handily placed in the running. Mount Val fell at the last fence, where ho was lip with the leaders, hut was being hard-ridden.

Novice's Game Effort The Novice Handicap provided a great finish, and Lady Tinkle, the favourite, just got home from .Royal Show and Indian Sun. Lady Tinkle was handily placed throughout, and she battled on very gamely to gain the verdict by half a, head from J toy a I Show, who made a splendid effort after coming out very wide. Like her dam, Horomea, Lady Tinkle evidently relishes heavy going, and she may prove useful as she matures. Royal Show made a little improvement on his creditable effort in the Trial Plate, and he nearly brought off a big surprise. 'lll long-striding Indian Sun is a half-brother to the Mitchclson Cup winner, Solarium. Laughing Song made a creditable showing for fourth, and Lord Midas was a fair fifth, after being up in front at the turn. Te Haka showed early pace, but failed to run on. No Excuses lor Favourite

No excuses could be urged for the defeat of the favourite, Gold Wren, in the July Steeplechase, in which ho was beaten more than half.a mile from home. Victory wont to the second fancy, Slayer, who deepened the eood impression he created in his earlier eliorts at the meeting. Slayer was second to last in the early stages, but he was handy with a round to go, and took the lead before entering the straight, to win well. He jumped with more confidence than on the second day, when he was probably a little nervous after his fall in the Wellington Steeplechase. Manawatu and Lactose went solid races, attempting to head the winner in the straight. Lord Hereford was in third position when he fell at the last fence, but he appeared to be tiring. Gold Wren again jumped well, but failed to stay after pulling hard early. All Irish was going nicely when he fell, but it, was too far from home to form any real idea of how otherwise he would have fared.

Winner's Sustained Run With a finishing eifort on the outside, the favourite Hunting It oval won the Crofton Handicap. There were only two horses behind him in the middle stages, and it was only m tho last little bit that ho got the better of Screen Star, who appeared likely to win when in front after passing the distance." The winner is a good type and he should be seen to further advantage while the tracks are soft. Screen Star ran. well and Windsor Chief again performed creditably, making a game effort at the distance. Blonde Princess was a respectable fourth, although she never appeared to bo really dangerous. Quilp and Hex Maitland weakened near tho end and Joe Louis did not appear to get away too well. Geniara returned carrying one of the barrier tapes, which no doubt hampered her. Failure of King Rey Supporters of the favourite, King Rey, were doomed to disappointment in the Winter Hurdles, as be fell while racing in the lead at the end of a mile. King Hey was travelling well when the mishap occurred, and the chances are that lie would have been difficult to beat. The race was won by tho 10-vear-old Curie, who assumed command for the second time about five furlongs from home, and scored very decisively. Curio handled the heavy going in great style and gave a fine display of fencing. Ellanui was always well placed and he fought on gamely in the straight, without having any chance with the winner. .After being tailed off fully a furlong behind the leaders, Disturbed made a great run crossing the top, but lie was weakening when lie got within striking distance and just struggled on for third. He might have done better if he had been kept closer to the field early.

lOrination went a good race, but was steadied by his 11.5 in the heavy ground. Courtyard and Royal Danoo cut up badly and were beaten a long way from homo.

Comfortable Success On the strength of his good finishing effort on the first day, Ned Cuttle was made favourite for the Winter Oats Handicap and he won in the easiest possible fashion. Ned Cuttle became prominent on the outside of the leading bunch at the turn and he streaked right away in the run home, registering; a fine performance in the bad ground. Lowenberg came home strongly from a long way back for second and Old Surrey was a fair third. Old Surrey made an early effort in the middle stages after being slowly away and he was weakening at the end. Kona was closer in fourth position nt the post than at any other stage. Skyrona, after running to the front at the turn, tired into fourth in the last furlong. Araboa and Mishna did best of the others. Yours Truly and Valmint were handy early, but failed to make any impression. Alma made up ground quickly at the turn, but the effort was too great after a slow beginning. High-class Sprinter

The top-weight, Majority } registered a fmo performance in winning the Onslow Stakes, for which he was fav.ouritc. Majority was just behind the leading hunch until reaching the straight and then ho came through in the style of a real racehorse to bo a good winner over the last furlong., Prince Acre made a courageous effort on the outside, but ho could make no impression on Majority, Royal Bachelor, after being one of the loaders all the way, battled on for third. Peacock was running on at the end to be a moderate fourth and closest of the others were Gay Seton and Fleet Street, who was up in front until reaching the straight. Bachelor King was handily placed early, but ho cut up badly at the end and finished well back. Thrilling Duel to Conclude

The Kia Ora Handicap provided a thrilling finish between Wagner- and Centrepoise, who dead-heated for first. Wagner appeared likely to win when he dashed past tho leader, Laughing Song, at the distance, but Centrepoise got up to divide the honours. Wagner and Centrepoise wore both very vigorously ridden and they responded in the most courageous fashion. Laughing Song showed a deal of dash in tho middle stages and battled on at tho end to pay a good price for third. Viracious was a creditable fourth and P,each King did best of the others. The race was run in rain and tho favourite, 151 Meynell, was never prominent. Erlick gave no troublo and tho rest wero well beaten.
