CAKE AND FRUIT SHOPS
NEW AWARD SOUGHT £5/10/- AND 40-HOUR WEEK [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] WELLINGTON, Sunday Workers in cake, fruit and confectionery shops and dairies are not at present covered by an award, and the New Zealand Shop Assistants' Union has framed proposals for these workers. The union is asking that daily hours should not exceed seven on three days of the week, three hours on one day of the week, and eight hours on two days of the week. A limit on weekly hours of 40 is sought, and it is urged that no assistant should be employed after 6 p.m. The wages claimed are: —Male assistants, to start, £1 5s n week, rising to £5 10s a week at the age of 20; female assistants, to commence at £1 10s a week, rising to £3 10s a week at the ago of '2O. It is suggested that juniors be limited to one assistant under 20 years of age to each throe or fraction of three assistants over 20.
The holiday provisions suggested Srovido for two weeks' annual holiay on full pay. and holidays on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day and the day following, Good Fridav, Easter Saturday, Easter Monday, Anniversary Day, Labour Day. union picnic day, the King's Birthday and Anzac Day. The closing times proposed aro 6 p.m. on four days of the week, noon on one day of tho week, and 9 p.m. on one day of tho week. It is also claimed that all shops should be closed on various statutory holidays and picnic day.
