TOY MANUFACTURING
EXTENSION IN DOMINION THE QUESTION OF PRICE [BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION"] WELLINGTON, Saturday Asked to comment on the statement regarding the shortage of toys and the high price of New Zealand toys, the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, said the importation of toys had not been entirely prohibited, as they may be imported from Great Britain to the extent of 50 per cent of last year's imports and 20 por cent from other British countries. There were some 20 toy manufacturers in New Zealand, lie said, and a wide variety of toys was already being made here. The Government was aware that several people were desirous of commencing the manufacture of mechanical toys, and, further, that each of the existing manufacturers was extending his plant on account of the increased orders.
In regard to price, compared on the quality basis, Mr. Sullivan said the New Zealand article was as cheap as that imported. If merchants who have given statements to the press considered the price unduly high and would supply details, an immediate inquiry _ would be made by the Price Investigation Tribunal.
