UNHOPPLED TROTTERS DEARTH OF GOOD HORSES ' ■ ■ V '' : EXODUS TO SOUTH ISLAND EFFECT OF STIFF PENALTIES ; ' BY ABAYDOS Tlio dearth of good class trotters in the North Island, due mainly to the exodus to the South, is a very serious problem. During the last two seasons 12 of the best unhoppled horses, including nine from the Auckland Province, have done most of their racing in the South Island. They are Captain Bolt, Great Admiral, Golden Eagle, Waikato Prince, Parrish Belle, Mountain Sun, Manna's Son, Te Kahu and Mute, reB resenting the Auckland area, Franz •erby from Palmerston North, Biworthy from Wellington, and Tan John from Waverley.. The death recently of Great Sonoma saved his owner"the trouble of taking the trotter to Addingt6n ; and Recepr tion will do her racing in the South Island next season. Polly Pan was sold to an Australian owner and Wah, Young Rodney, Meadow King and Bingen Sun have been relegated to the paddock for the present. The main cause of the drift, southward is the severe penalties set down by the Handicapping Committee for trotters reaching the intermediate section. A few years ago the' Auckland Trotting Club evolved a scheme of classes to encourage the promotion of improving trotters to the next grade, and in due time, good fields were built up for 3.38 and 4.52 classes. Almost immediately more severe penalties were introduced, with the result that horses after one or two wins were so far back that their chances against improvers who reached the limit were very slight. The effect.of this was to send the best trotters either out of the province or out of commission, with an unfortunate result, the rapid depletion of fields in the better class events.

With only a small handful of the best horses left, clubs have been forced to rovert to the slower limits, in the hope of again building up the higher standard, but during tho process, the tightly assessed trotters are out of action. Unlimited opportunities are offering in the South Island, owners wishing to keep their charges racing have no' option but to take them South or sell to southern owners. Once reaching tho advanced classes in the other island, penalties'are lenient and this keeps the fields well filled and trotters in commission.- " • : "• V

Between the severe penalties and lack of trotting permits compared with the South Island,' the position in the North is a trying one for owners and the clubs, and unless the Handicapping Committee can be induced to alter the present system of penalties on trotters in the intermediate classes, the trek South is likely to be continued to the detriment of the northern clubs. ' i - The. popularity of ; races for straightout trotters has • long been noted,. and when the better class horses meet, the competitions raise, public enthusiasm. This was, demonstrated when the Manawatu Trotting Club tightened -up to 4.54, but again the winner, Chudie, was sent back 60 yards • for earning £145. This horse is now on 4.47, and with the trend of limits at the coming meetings can be counted out as regards his trotting prospects.

TRAINER ON HOLIDAY J. T. JAMIESON IN AUCKLAND , The Randwick trainer J. T. Jamieson, accompanied by Mrs. Jamieson, arrived yesterday by the Awatea on a holiday visit to the Dominion. Jamieson expressed pleasure at the good form revealed by the two-year-old High Caste, although he was disappointed at bis defeat in the Sires' Produce Stakes. He was at a loss to account for the colt's defeat. To all outward appearances, High Caste was quite fit, but be failed to display the dash that had characterised his other performances in Australia. High Caste's victory in the Champagne Stakes, after having none the best of the running, was regarded as a sterling effort.
