GAOL FOR THEFT OF £ls
GOVERNMENT SERVANT [BY TELEGRAPH —rRF.SS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Friday For stealing £ls, the property of the New Zealand Government, James Duncan TifFen, aged 38, was sentenced to two months' imprisonment with hard labour by Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M. TifTcn pleaded guilty. Detective-Sergeant McLennan said accused had been employed for the past 18 months as a draughtsman by the Government Housing Department. He had failed to forward a tender deposit for £ls. Ho had been earning £6 10s weekly. Accused pleaded that the theft was committed in a moment of weakness. He had no other excuse.
The magistrate said he was not satisfied with the explanation and could not understand why a single man earning that wage should have to steal.
