CUSTOMS REVENUE ALL SECTIONS ADVANCE IMPORT RESTRICTIONS EFFECTS NOT YET FELT With the effects of the import restrictions not yet felt, substantial advances were recorded in all branches of the revenue collected by the Customs Department at Auckland last month, compared with February of the previous year. The figures for the first 11 months of the present financial year are also ahead of the returns for the corresponding period of 1937-38. Customs revenue last month was £317,895, an increase of £43,167, compared with February, 1938, and £20,449 above the collection for January of this year. The bulk of the goods landed during the month were ordered prior to December 5 and, as a result, they are not affected by the subsequent restrictions. There is often a lapse of some months between the ordering of goods and the time when they are despatched, and it is considered that the full effects of the new policy are not likely to be reflected in the customs returns until about May.
