ACTIVITY IN CITY FIGURES FOR FEBRUARY OVER £134,000 IN TOO MONTHS Already the amount of building activity in tho city is showing a substantial increase on tho expenditure of recent years, the figures for the first two months of the year being well in excess of £30,000 over the amounts spent in tho two previous years. The 176 building permits issued by the City Council during February represented a value of £6G,127, as against £59,070 for the 117 permits issued in February of last year. The total for the two months of thiß year is £134,162, while in January and February of last year tho expenditure was £96,460, and £99,250 for the first two months of 1937.

Included in tho permits last month were those for 30 new dwellings. Among tho larger jobs were the new hall and church centre at the Pitt Street Methodist Church and the new clubhouse at the municipal golf links. Figures for the last three JanuaryFebruary periods aro as follows: — 1030 1938 1037 January .. £08,035 £37,380 £40,831 February .. 00.127 50,070 40,419 £134.162 £96,450 £99,250 The 30 new dwellings accounted for an expenditure of £30,025. Of these, 13 were estimated to cost over £IOOO each, while one was in excess of £2OOO. This makes 58 new homes built this year, as against 38 for the same period of last year and 46 in tho first two months of 1937.
