TITIRANGI SCHOOL
THE NEW BUILDING OFFICIAL OPENING TO-DAY REUNION OF OLD PUPILS Replacing temporary corrugated iron quarters which have served the educational needs of the district since the previous building was destroyed by fire in January, 1930, a new school will be oponed at Titirangi by the AttorneyGeneral and Minister of Justice, the Hon. H. G. Jt. Mason, this afternoon. The new building is the latest type of sunshine school and was erected at a cost of £3500.
The history of the Titirangi school is closely identified with the work of three generations of the Bishop family of Titirangi. In the 'sixties the lato Mr. and Mrs. Bishop enabled other families of the district to gain the benefit of a private tutor whom they employed for their own children, the classes being conducted in an attic of thfiir homestead. '
Some years later the school was transferred to a shed on the property of Mr. Pugh and in 1872 the settlers constructed a hall which was also used as a school. Eventually it was handed over to the Education Department and was in constant use until its destruction by fire in 1930. A son of the original Mr. Bishop, Mr. W. J. Bishop, acted as chairman of the school committee for more than 30 years, and the position is now held by the latter's son, Mr. W. A. Bishop. The new school, which has four acres of grounds, possesses magnificont views of the city, the upper reaches of the Manukau Harbour and the Henderson district. Following the official opening by Mr. Mason to-day, ft reunion of old pupils is to be held, followed by a dance in the evening.
