BUDGET PROSPECTS

SMALL SURPLUS LIKELY INTIMATION BY MINISTER The possibility of a slight surplus in the Budget was revealed yesterday by the Minister of Finance, the Hon. VV. Nash. The Minister said that income tax was expected to produce a little less than the Budget estimate of £9,500,000, but the revenue from customs duty, sales tax and beer duty was likely to exceed the estimates.

Mr. Nash said he did not consider that the effects of the import control system would be apparent to any considerable extent in the current quarter. However, they would operate throughout the coming financial year.

The Minister forecast an earlier Budget than usual this year, probably about the middle of July. Parliament was expected to assemble in June.
