STEAMER PUTS BACK

LONDON VOYAGE DELAYED

ALLEGED STOWAWAY LANDED INCIDENT ON THE MAIMOA The discovery of an alleged stowaway when the ship was nearing Tiritiri on her voyage out of the Hauraki Gulf from Auckland to London resulted in the Shaw, Savill and Albion cargo steamer Maimoa putting about and returning to the Rangitoto Reef, where a man was taken from the vessel by the police. *" The Maimoa left Queen's Wharf at 3.15 yesterday afternoon and at about 5.30, when she was about to clear the gulf, a man was found asleep on a bunk in the firemen's quarters. The discovery was reported to Auckland by wireless and while the Maimoa was returning to Rangitoto Channel the launch Tawa, chartered by the Queen's Wharf police, left to meet her. A young man was< taken into custody on a charge of stowing away and will appear in the Police Court this morning.

The Maimoa resumed her voyage after a delay of more than an hour. This incident was the final chapter in a number of troubles affecting the ship during her stay on the New Zealand coast. At Wellington she was held in port for hours after sailing time in order that a number of her crew could be replaced. In order to enable the steamei to clear Auckland yesterday with a full crew about 20 replacements had to be made by New Zealanders or by Englishmen returned home as distressed British seamen. Numbers were signed on yesterday and in spite of this the Maimoa had to wait at Queen's Wharf for 15 minutes for a party of men ashore. At one stage the ship's lines had been slackened off, but she had to move alongside the berth again for a straggler.
