CONSTABLE'S SUSPICION

DEMANDED DRIVER'S LICENCE COURT QUESTIONS AUTHORITY [BY TKT/KGKAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] PALMERSTON NORTH, Monday "What authority had you to ask the man to show you his driver's licence?" asked Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M., of a constable in the Pahnerston North Court to-day. The reply was that as there had been a safe robbery in the vicinity not so very long ago, to see a car parked up a right-of-way at 3.30 in the morning was something to be regarded as suspicions. Further than that, when asked his name the occupant would not give it. All he would say was that the constable could take his number.

The magistrate pointed out that the car was on private land and, further, that the man was not driving it at the time. He was actually sitting in the back seat. The man was not charged with refusing to give his name, but with refusing to show hie driver's licence. The magistrate dismissed the charge.
