SOME SMART SPBINTS HEROIC MAID SHOWS' SPEED LADY MEATH'S SOLID SIX A number of horses with engagements on Monday galloped at Ellerslie yesterday. The No. 3 grass track was available and the going was fast. Scot Abbey (Tonks) ran six furlongs in 1.22 2-5. Over the same distance, Kelly (Gilchrist) did much better than Palmint (Smith) to record 1.18, tho first three taking 39 1-os, Kelly worked freely and appeared to pull up sound. Entail (Rayner) was going comfortably throughout six furlongs, running the last five in 1.8 4-5. He looks well after his good showing in the Christmas Handicap on Boxing Day. The two-vear-olds Beaulivre (Morris), Pern (Wiggins) and Silver Stick (Broughton) were companions over live furlongs in 1.2 3-£, the first two being run in 24 3-ss. Beaulivre, who looks all the better for his race in the Great Northern Foal Stakes, went attractively, and was going easily in front at the finish. His next start will be in the Royal Stakes on Tuesday. Pern shaped well and is a promising colt. Respectful Shows Speed After beginning slowly, Respectful (McTavish) displayed speed by getting to the end of five furlongs in 1.2 2-5. He looks bright and well. Bicle-a-Wee (Kerr) and Bronze Wing (Buchanan) finished together at the conclusion of an easy half mile in 52 l-ss, the last three furlongs taking 40 l-ss. Lady Meath (McTavish) finished in front of Mai de Mer (Smith) at the end of six furlongs in 1.14 3-5, running the last five in 1.2. Lady Meath impressed, and was doing it very nicely at the finish. Peerless (Wiggins) strode over six furlongs in 1.19 3-5, the first two taking 26 2-ss. She did not appear to be at home on the right-handed track, but she is in good order for her Derby engagement. flaile Boy (Ferguson) took 52s for half a mile. Scotland (Howard) ran five furlongs in 1.4 4.-5, the first two in 25 2-ss. Scotland, who is now under the care of M. B. Abbot, looks in good heart. The Buzzer (Morris), Quadroon (Wiggins) and Padishah (Ellis) were associated over five furlongs in 1.4 1-5, the first two taking 25 4-ss. They finished together and all worked freely. From practically a standing start, Chevychase (Broughton) sprinted half a mile in 51 2-ss, the first furlong taking 13 3-ss. Defaulter's Easy Bound After running the first furlong in 13s, King Dazzle (Messervy) got to the end of half a mile in 50s. Defaulter (Ellis) traversed an easy round, the last half mile taking 54 3-ss. He is in the pink of condition and moved freely. Hackenschmidt (Cosford) and Illimani (Nicolson) went away from the six furlongs, but the former slipped and fell coming round the turn into the straight, but neither horse nor rider was injured, lllimani was pulled up in the straight and the task was not gone on with. Heroic Maid (Evans) cleared out from Sir Lysander (Winder) over half a mile, covering the last three furlongs in 36 3-ss. Heroic Maid is very speedy and has only to stay on a little better to win races.

Displaying his usual speed, Surella (Wiggins) ran half a mile in 49 2-ss. Odtaa (Messervy) registered 50 2-5s over the same ground, covering the last three furlongs in 37 3-ss. Sir' Robin (Wiggins) was easing ,up at the conclusion of six furlongs in 1.20 3-5. Philcourt (Messervy) increased the pace over the last half mile of a round to run home in 51 4-ss. He was moving a bit short. On the two-vear-old track, High Caste was allotted easy pacing. He looks improved after his race and is to contest the Royal Stakes next Tues-. day. HAWERA ACTIVITIES GOOD TEAM FOR STRATFORD [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] HAWERA, Thursday Several horses who have not yet raced during the holidays, but are booked to race at Stratford, % were galloped at Hawera this morning, when the plough track and course proper provided firm going. Maahanui and In Command completed two rounds of useful -work by covering five furlongs in 1.8 3-5. Lord Cavendish ran an easy half-mile in 50 2-ss. The Beau Pere gelding has made jaipid improvement in recent weeks. Amoroso joined H. Scally's stable at the conclusion of the Taranaki meeting; He is to be tried as a jumper.. Student Prince was slightly sore after racing at New Plymouth and he will not. start on the opening day at Stratford. Race Call. Rami eh, Silver Gift. W msoiue Lu. Gold Clare, Fiancee. Carmodv,' Lickem, Prime Quality, Pretty Lass and Lady Kyra appear to be a strong contingent for the Stratford meeting.
