WEEK-END IN GAOL

PUNISHMENT OF MOTORISTS OPPOSITION TO PROPOSALS [BT TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION] GREYMOUTH, Monday "This is perhaps a spectacular way of approaching the question." said Mr. R. P. Furness at the Marlborough quarterly meeting of the Sbuth Island Motor Union to-day, referring to the proposal of the Minister of Transport, the Hon. R. Semple, to impose weekend terms in gaol for drunken drivers. "Drunken drivers will have to pay the full penalty if safety first is to be rammed home," he added. "The proposal seems a bit of ft retreat on the part of the Minister," continued Mr. Furness. "If the proposal is introduced, the gaols will not be sufficiently large to accommodate all wishing to partake of the States hospitality at the week-ends." The North Island Motor Union's decision to oppose any alteration in the penalties for motorists was unanimously affirmed.
