CAR LEAVES ROAD
WOMAN SERIOUSLY HURT THROWN OUT OF WINDOW DRIVER AND WIFE INJURED £froji our own correspondent] MERCER, Wednesday Three persons were injured when a small motor-car which was being driven from Rotorua to Auckland left the road about two miles south of Mercer this afternoon and continued down into a ditch about oft. deep. The injured were:— Mr. M. W. S. Lane, storekeeper, of Omaio, Opotiki, who suffered abrasions to the chest. Mrs. Margaret Lilian Lane, aged 62, lacerations to the left arm and concussion. Miss Jessie Hay Buchanan, aged 64, fractured right leg, concussion and lacerations to the head.
Mr. Lane had left Rotorua this morning to come on to Auckland. When the car left the road and ran down the embankment of the ditch, Miss Buchanan was thrown out of one of the side windows on to the embankment. Mr. Lane and his wife, however, retained their seats. Constable F. T. Wakelin, of Mercer, who had been taking measurements in connection with another accident which had happened a short distance along the road, foud tho car a few minutes later when ho was returning to Mercer. He assisted tho injured until a passing motorist drove into Pukekoho for medical help. After being attended to at the side of the road by Dr. A. T. Begg, of Pukekohe, all three people were taken to the Auckland Hospital by a St. John ambulance. Mrs. Lane and Miss Buchanan were admitted to the hospital and it was stated last night that the condition of the latter was serious, while Mrs. Lane's condition was not regarded as serious. Mr. Lane was treated in the casualty department and discharged.
