AGED MAORI CHIEF
IHAIA HUTANA'S DEATH LEADER IN HAWKE'S BAY KNOWLEDGE OF THE RACE [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] HASTINGS, Wednesday A well-known Hawke's Bay Maori chief, Ihaia Hu.tana, aged 96, died this morning at the Waipawa Maori settlement, where he had lived most of hia life. Connected by birth with most of the Maori tribes of Hawke's Bay and the East Coast-, he was in his earlier days a prime mover in the Katahitanga, a movement which had as its objective the federation of all the Maori tribes. At one time the Katahitanga held a great deal of interest to all Maori people.
Ihaia Hutana had a sound knowledge of Maori affairs and was considered one of the most reliable historians of the race. He took active interest right up to the time of-his death in all matters concerning the betterment of the Maori race from the industrial, educational and spiritual points of view. It is expected there will be representatives at the tangi at Waipawa from many parts of New Zealand.
