UNPLEASANT WEATHER

COLD AND SHOWERY farmers welcome rain RELATIVELY LIGHT FALL Scattered showers of rain fell throughout yesterday, and at various times during the evening Auckland city and suburbs were enveloped* with driving rain, accompanied by a cold wind from the south-west. Between seven and nine o'clock last nigiiS sheets of rain swept across the city, and there was every indication of a substantial rainfall, but at 9.10 the weather cleared, although the outlook held prospect of further falls durm» the night. Only ,29in. of rain fell between midnight on Sunday an i midnight last night. The minimum temperature yesterday was 56 degrees and the maximum 61 degrees. Whatever holiday-makers may have thought of the changeable, rainy da> yesterday, gardeners and farmers in the Auckland Province always welcome rain at this time of the year. In the Hamilton district yesterday there wero moderate showers that occasionally developed into comparatively heavy falls at intervals during the day. So doubtful was the prospect early in th<i afternoon that several sports fixtures had to be postponed. Although light, the rain which fell during the afternoon and evening was welcome.
