BRIGADE'S EFFICIENCY
DISPLAY AT WHAKATANE SERVICE MEDALS PRESENTED £by telegraph—OWN correspondent] WHAKATANE. Friday A demonstration which showed the efficiency of the brigade and equipment was given by the Whakatane volunteer fire brigade in the centre of ,Whakatane. In 1 minute 14 seconds after the alarm had been given the engine was manned and brought to the intersection of George Street _ and the Strand and water was showing from two leads of hose. The method of rescuing persons overcome bv smoke and their subsequent resuscitation was demonstrated when a fireman was lowered from a balcony, and the display ended when a lead was taken to the" river and the suction pump was coupled up. Awards for long service were later presented at a social evening at the fire station as follows: —Foreman B. Norman, five-year medal: DeputySuperintendent T.* Hurndell, two-year bar. making seven years' service; Fireman N. Corcoran 2 two-year bar, making 11 years' service; Firemen S. Dent and H. Parry, three-year certificates.
