DASH TO SAFETY
ORDEAL OF TWO MEN BURNING RUBBER FUMES [from OCR OWN correspondent] SYDNEY. Oct. 14 Two men were working in the Gurton Tire Company's building in Nicholson Street, East Sydney, when a fire broke out on the floor below them. Edward Gurton, manager, attracted by the odour of smouldering rubber, ran downstairs, to find one corner of the building alight. "Come down for your life," he called to Roy Matthews, his companion. "As I came down," said Matthews, "I ran right into the fumes, and by the time we got out—we had no chance of fighting the blaze—l was almost all in." Firemen, under Chief Officer RichardBon and his deputy, Mr. Beare. did great work in confining the blaze to the centre of the outbreak, though considerable' damage was done.
