DONCASTER CUP

VICTORY OF EPIGRAM MAGNIFICENT HORSEMANSHIP GREAT PRAISE FOR CARSLAKE [from, our own correspondent] : . LQNDON, Sept. 12 After ■winning the; St, Leger with Scottish Union, Mr. J. V. Rank went on to annex the Scarborough Stakes with. Michoumy and the Doncaster Cup with Epigram. B. Carslake, 53 years of age, was the rider each time, and all three horses are trained by N. Cannon. The Cup was a great race and ■an exciting one to -watch, for Epigram's victory was only a head from Slip On. with Pairing third, Senor, the favourite, fourth, and Overthrow fifth and last. Epigram is a five-year-old horse by Son-in-Law out of Flying Sally. He carried lOst. and gave the second | horse 271b. .

Slip On led into the straight, going easily, by four or five lengths. Overthrow was out of the race, but the othef" three, close .together, went after the leader, but it was left to the topweight to try to catch the leader. Carslake never uses a whip unless it is absolutely essential, but he used it. One hundred yards from the post it did not seem possible that Epigram could catch Slip On, but Carslake did not give up trying, and with the horse under hini doing all that he could do the gap between the two horses decreased. Fifty yards from home it was thought just possible that Epigram could win, but Carslake has never ridden better than he is doing now. He really lifted Epigram past the line and, won a most wonderful race by a head. No rider has ever known better where the winning post is, and the moment that horse and rider •were past it they stopped. The Sunday Times correspondent writes: "It was a fine achievement on Carslake's part to ride the winner of this great race in the evening of his career. He looked tired after the race, but he is certainly a wonder; and in the middle fifties' is riding with all the strength and brilliance of 20 years ago. I never saw the giants of old— Archer, Fordham and the rest of them —but I cannot believe there was ever a greater jockey than 'Brownie' Carslake, and his colleagues in the weighing room are of the same opinion. In the Scarborough Stakes on Michoumy, also in the colours of Mr. Rank, his perfectly-timed effort was an objectlesson to all jockeys." Epigram and Slip On are among the Cesarewitch acceptors. In the handicap 'Epigram is set to concede 311b. to his younger rival, so that if Slip On makes normal progress during the next six weeks he should have a good chance in the big Newmarket event. Panorama's victory in the Champagne Stakes was smart work, even although he beat the Apple Ring colt by only a head. With seven victories in seven outings to his credit, Panorama, one of the most mature two-y(jar-olds ever seen, goes into retirement for the'season. Mrs. J. J. Corrigau is the owner and Captain BoydRochfort the trainer.

Seven races a day,_ run at intervals of 25 minutes, is a programme to be tried at Warwick. It is doubted whether these tactics are going to be appreciated.

NAMARA REVEALS PACE NEW PLYMOUTH EXERCISES [B\* TELEGRAPH- —OWN CORRESPONDENT] NEW PLYMOUTH, Thursday All fast work at New Plymouth this morning took place on the trial grass track, which was opened for the first time since its reconstruction, and it was slow. Clessamor will race at Waverley on Labour Day. ■ • : . MATAMATA STABLE The Matamata trainer R. H. Martin has a very useful team under his care at present and he turned out two winners at Paeroa on Monday, when he scored with Rona Bay and En Tour. Bona Bay was very capably handled by E. Mangon, who is now attached to Martin's stable, and intends to confine his activities to riding this season. Manson can still go to scale at the handy weight of 7.9.
