HALF-MILE CHASE

BUKGLAE CAUGHT FIVE CHARGES ADMITTED — v- - 1 COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE , The capture of a burglar by a young man after an early-morning chaso of about half a milo was described in the Police Court yesterday, before Messrs. D. Donaldson and S. Leah, J.P.'s, when John Francis Schdroski, labourer, aged 33 (Mr, Robinson), pleaded guilty to fivo charges of breaking and entering houses in Morningside, Mount Albert, Epsom and Ponsdnby between Augifst 24 and September 26.

The charges related to the theft of 30s in money and a quantity of goods of a total value of £9l 8s 6d, The articles referred to included a fur coat and two gold rings, two attache cases, cigarettes, canned foods and an electric torch.

Owen Henry Trevor Stevens said that at 3.15 a.m. on September 20 he heard his father call to him and saw accused running away from their house in Western Springs Road. He gave chase and finally caught accused after running about half a mile. Ho throw him and held him down until witness' father arrived, and they took him back to the house until the police were called.

Constablo C. Kirk said he arrested accused, who was in his stocking feet. They visited ar near by reserve before proceeding to the police station to recover accused's coat and shoes.

Acting-Detective-Sergeant F. N. Aplin said lie recovered some of the stolen property in accused's room. Accused made statements admitting all his offences and said ho desired to clear up the matters. Accused waa committed to the Supremo Court for sentence.
