BOAT HARBOUR

ORAKEI PROPOSAL LABOUR BODY'S PROTEST OKAHU BAY AMENITIES A decision to send a letter of protest to the Minister of Marine, the Hon. P. Fraser, against the proposal to build a boat harbour at Okahu Bay, Orakei, was made at a meeting of the Auckland council of the Federation of Labour. "it is held that a boat harbour in that locality would interfere with Okahu Bay and spoil the facilities which the children from the Orakei settlement should have," said Mr. H. Campbell, secretary of the Auckland Trades Council, in a statement yesterday. "If launches and yachts were moored in front of tho bay debris and oil would be washed ashore by the tide. As there will eventually bo about 1600 women and children in" the suburb it is considered that a scheme which would spoil the amenities available to them should be opposed. "The proposed harbour, in addition, would bo right at the front door of Auckland and passengers on, overseas ships entering the harbour would not get a very good impression with about 1000 piles projecting from the water." Mr. Campbell added that a proposal to have tho harbour at Cox's Creek, a short distance up tho harbour from Shelly Beach, met with greater approval. There was ample room there and tho beach was not sandy. A boat harbouy. already existed at Shelly Beach and this could easily bo extended to talco in tho Cox's Creek area and if necessary be continued toward Point Chevalier. Tho decision to communicate with the Minister of Marine was made on tho motion of Mr. I{. Jones, president of the Auckland Waterside Workers' Unyion, seconded by Mr. P. H. Matthews, delegate from tho Auckland Electrical Workers' Union, and president of tho Orakei [Residents' Association.
